Most small business websites look nice — but don’t actually work.
Whether you’re a barber, builder, beautician or bakery, your website should do one job above all else: bring in customers.
I’ve seen too many local businesses spend hundreds (sometimes thousands) on a website that looks great but performs poorly. So today, I’m breaking down five common mistakes that could be stopping your website from getting results — and how to fix each one fast.
If your site takes longer than 3 seconds to load, most people will simply leave — and Google will quietly push your site down the rankings.
💡 Fix: Compress your images before uploading, avoid unnecessary plugins, and use reliable hosting. Fast, lightweight websites always perform better.
Pro Tip: I build every website with speed in mind — optimised images, clean code, and proper caching from day one.
People won’t take action if you don’t tell them what to do. You might have an amazing website, but if there’s no “Book Now”, “Call Today”, or “Get a Quote” button, visitors will just scroll away.
💡 Fix: Add a strong call to action on every page — ideally one that stands out visually. Make it obvious what you want your visitors to do next.
A good website guides people from curiosity to contact — every single time.
Over 70% of web traffic now comes from mobile phones. If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re losing out on potential customers instantly.
💡 Fix: Test your site on your phone. Text should be easy to read, buttons should be tappable, and forms should be simple to fill in.
Every site I build is fully responsive, meaning it looks perfect on any device — from phones to desktops.
If you’re not showing up on Google Maps or in local searches, your customers will find your competitors instead.
💡 Fix: Add your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) consistently across your website and directories. Also, create or optimise your Google Business Profile — it’s one of the easiest ways to get free traffic.
Want help getting found locally? I can set up and optimise your Google profile for you.
Your website isn’t just about looks — it’s about connection.
If the words on your site don’t clearly explain why someone should choose you, you’ll lose their attention fast.
💡 Fix: Write content that speaks directly to your audience. Talk about their problems, their goals, and how your service helps. Keep it real, simple, and focused on benefits.
Great design brings people in. Great content gets them to call.
Your website should be your hardest-working employee, not just an online brochure.
If you’re not getting customers from your website, chances are it’s one (or all) of these mistakes. The good news? They’re easy to fix — and once you do, your site will start working for you instead of against you.
