From growing up in care and learning to code, to a 15-year career in retail and marketing, starting an online business and eventually building hundreds of websites — my journey into business hasn't exactly followed the traditional route.
I'm a UK entrepreneur working across websites, digital marketing, e-commerce, CRM systems, automation and AI.
Today I'm the founder and creator behind several digital businesses and platforms, each built to solve a different problem for businesses, trades, creators and entrepreneurs.
I grew up in care and lived in a children's home from the age of four.
While I was still in care, I became interested in computers, coding and building websites. At the time, I thought it might be something I could eventually turn into a career.
But when I left care, life had other priorities.
I was on my own, with my own home and bills to pay. I needed to earn a living, so the websites and coding took a back seat and I went into retail.
What looked like a completely different career eventually gave me much of the experience I use in business today.
I spent around 15 years working in retail.
Growing up without much gave me a strong work ethic. I knew that if I wanted something different from life, I was going to have to work for it.
I worked my way up through retail, becoming a Duty Manager and then a Store Manager, learning first-hand about customers, sales, people, targets, operations and what actually makes a business work day to day.
Eventually, I moved into marketing.
That's when my perspective started to change.
I could see the amount of revenue good marketing could generate. I was helping established companies generate millions in sales while personally I was still just getting by.
It made me start questioning something:
For me, it became the point where something I'd been thinking about finally became something I acted on.
When COVID arrived, businesses and consumers were suddenly forced to change the way they operated.
People were buying online. Businesses that had relied heavily on physical locations needed websites, e-commerce, digital marketing and new ways to communicate with their customers.
To me, one thing became obvious:
I started small, launching my own business selling products through eBay.
As it began to grow, the natural next step was getting my own website.
That's when I discovered a problem that would ultimately shape what I do today.
Getting a professional website built could cost thousands of pounds.
For a large established company, that might be manageable. But for someone starting a business from scratch, spending thousands before you've even proved the idea can be a massive barrier.
I already had knowledge of coding and websites from years earlier, so rather than paying someone else, I went back to learning.
I took further training, brought my website design knowledge up to date and started building again.
First, I built for myself.
Then I started building for other people.
What started as a way to build my own online business eventually became a completely new career.
Over the last five years, I've built hundreds of websites and worked with businesses across a wide range of industries.
I've helped established businesses improve what they already had, but one of the parts I've enjoyed most has been helping people take an idea and actually get it online.
That experience took me far beyond website design.
I began working with e-commerce, digital marketing, SEO, social media, lead generation, CRM systems, booking systems, automation and AI.
And the more businesses I worked with, the more I noticed the same problem appearing again and again.
One platform for your website. Another for email. Another for bookings. Another for your CRM. Another for courses. Another for automation. Another for AI.
Before long, a small business can be paying for a collection of subscriptions while trying to learn five or six different systems.
Most business owners don't want to become software experts.
They want to run their business.
That realisation is a big part of why I started creating separate businesses and platforms around the different people I was helping.
Today, benmassey.uk sits at the centre of my personal work, while the businesses I've created focus on different areas of the digital world.
benmassey.uk is my personal home online — where I share what I've learned about websites, digital marketing, AI, business growth and building businesses online.
It's also where businesses can work directly with me, explore my services and access articles, guides, resources and practical tools designed to help them grow.
Explore benmassey.uk →BGN Digital was created to give businesses a more connected way to manage their digital presence.
Instead of using separate companies and platforms for websites, marketing, CRM, lead generation and automation, BGN Digital brings digital services and technology together to help businesses grow.
Visit BGN Digital →Creova was created for creators, coaches and entrepreneurs who want to turn their knowledge, skills or audience into a real online business.
The aim is to remove the need for multiple expensive platforms by bringing websites, communities, memberships, courses, digital products, marketing, CRM, automation and AI together.
Visit Creova →My own journey into online business started with e-commerce, so I know how quickly the cost and complexity of launching a store can grow.
StoreLaunch was created to make professional e-commerce more accessible, including solutions for specialist businesses that may struggle with the limitations of mainstream platforms.
Visit StoreLaunch →AI is incredibly powerful, but most AI tools aren't designed around how a plumber, builder, electrician, landscaper or other trade actually runs their business.
Trademate AI is being built around making AI and automation practical for trades — helping with enquiries, follow-up, marketing, customer management, admin and the everyday jobs that take business owners away from doing their actual work.
Visit Trademate AI →The audiences may be different, but the thinking behind every business I build is very similar.
Technology should make running a business easier. Business owners shouldn't need to become software experts just to manage their customers and marketing.
I've started a business without a huge budget myself. I understand why sensible pricing matters, particularly when somebody is just getting started.
A website, piece of software or marketing campaign should have a purpose — whether that's saving time, generating enquiries, making sales or helping the business grow.
“I've been the person starting with very little. I've been the employee helping build somebody else's business. Now I'm using everything I've learned to build my own — and help other people build theirs.”
